Yesterday was the first day of school for all the kids in the neighborhood. I was always the kid that never got bored during summer and cried the night before the first day back. I have to say, I felt a twinge of nostalgia watching all the kids walk to school and knowing I will never be able to do that again.
The one thing I always looked forward to about back to school was shopping for new school supplies. I loved how smoothly new pens wrote and the smell of new textbooks. I loved freshly sharpened pencils and notebooks that were never opened. I remember spending hours at The Container Store, walking up and down the isles, clutching my school supply list, mesmerized by how pretty and new everything was. I happily spent more money on school supplies than back to school clothes. What are some of your favorite school supplies?

We don't really seem to have the same school supply thing here. We never got reading lists and we don't need to buy our own notebooks or anything like that. Just some pens, and you're set. Most people in my classes keep the same stuff year after year too, just replacing protractors and pencils and so on as they run out. When we start secondary school there is the big purchase of a scientific calculator! But I got my brother's old one, with scratched initials on the back and no cover.
I tend to buy some new stationary at this time of year though just for myself. We don't have those pretty composition books here either but I bought one in a drugstore of all places this summer on holiday in New York.

And when I stopped buying notebooks I got excited about decorating binders myself.
