Another use for books
Ann sent me the link to this post on her blog after seeing my post of this photo shoot a while's back. I am giddily in love with using pages of old books as wallpaper (and i thought books were only for reading... ha!) and I loved seeing the process behind it all.

I would love nothing more than to have a wall like this in my own bedroom - I just don't think I'd have the heart to destroy a book. Do any of you lovelies have wallpaper made from pages of old books?

I have an old book that I'm slowly destroying. I haven't used it for wallpaper but I have used it to wrap presents, scrapbook with, it's been the backdrop of little letters to my friends.

Very beautiful effect, lovely photographs. I think it would be OK if you had two copies of a book ... but otherwise I just couldn't do it.

how lovely! i used old pages to cover my book case. the library at my old school would give away old books, so i used a revenue sharing book!

I have collected vintage books over the years for the sole purpose of tearing out the pages and doing SOMETHING - whether scrapbooking, gift wrapping, papering (walls, bulletin boards, whatever), but as others have said, it's just too hard to purposely destroy a book (Books Are Our Friends!). BUT, near me in Brooklyn there's a place called the Brooklyn Free Store which is like a thrift store but everything is FREE. I recently dropped some stuff off and was rewarded by finding about 10 Japanese novels in paperback - nothing precious or vintage, but the pages are all in Japanese symbols, which is very special to me. so THESE I'm optimistic I'll be able to tear up! I'd love to make a photo backdrop out of them.

Let's see if I ever actually do that. Work gets in the way of SO many fun things! It just ain't right!

I love Ann's photos and I think her wall looks amazing. I also have a wall like this in my home, and I love it. Another idea for those who can't bring themselves to rip up a book, how about photo coping pages?

What a beautiful blog you have my dear.

As I a book lover I find it extremely difficult to do anything destructive or creative with a book. I have, but only after very careful consideration to make sure that the book is not rare, unique in any way and a complete 'goner'. I really love this idea of using book pages for wallpaper. I'd like to give this a try with a favorite book of poetry.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog recently!

you should try the book, "wreck this journal".
i believe the only purpose is to destroy it, in various different manners.
i don't have the heart to try it myself, but it's meant to be very liberating.

we could go anywhere..

I love how this looks, but I don't think I could tear apart a book either. It'd be hard. Unless I maybe got it really cheap used or something. Then again, I rent :( So I can't do that, yet!

I absolutely love the way this looks on the wall, but - like you - I don't know if I'd have the heart to take a book apart. Books are such dear friends to me!!

ummm yeah not too sure abt destroying books. although if you get the book from second hand shop and you get them in a really cheap price and the contents are really not interesting to you.. i guess you could consider this as recycling rather than destroying?

thelayeredpancake on October 22, 2010 at 12:24 PM said...

i so agree with you. although i love love love the idea of having this as a wallpaper, it would really just break my heart to go through the motions of tearing a book page by page.
although it would be nice to have pride and prejudice easily available.

Wow, what a fabulous idea! I can't say that I've used old book pages as wallpaper, but I did make a series of photographic cyanotype prints on them!

I love this idea!

while I am definetely a book-lover, I don't think they're sacred and think that if you have a great creative way to recycle a book that is unloved anyway, then I say bravo!

lovely:)
