Oh film, you've captured my heart

I love film photography. A lot. Which is ironic because I hardly ever use film. Digital's just easier I guess. But it still doesn't replace film.
Oh film film film
Oh film film film
There's something about film, the way it captures light (ha here I go with lighting again!) and digital does not come remotely close to competing.
Oh film film film
Oh film film film
Oh film film film
Click on photos for sources. Second and last photo sources unknown. Please comment if you know. Such a shame because I just love the last one. Everything about it-the shadows, her face, her eyes-is just perfect. The more I stare at it, the more I love it.

I've made a goal to incorporate the use of film more in my photo shoots. So I'm going to use black and white film in my next photo shoot with Kelcie! I'm a little bit nervous because I hope it comes out okay. I really don't like the idea of not having the instant gratification of seeing what pictures you just took. But I guess with anything worthwhile, you have to be patient.

Oh yay! Film is great. I get nervous every time I get my negatives back from the lab because you just never know! Glad to know that you are embracing it again. Good luck!

These pictures are beautiful. I wish I knew more about film photography...you can achieve such moving images.

Sometimes we forget that the oldies did something right. I love the last picture too! The light on her nose is something you'd only capture with film, and it makes the picture so much more beautiful.

Micaela,
I love film photography as well. Do you print your own photos when you use film? It's such an amazing process to watch the image appear.

These photos are gorgeous, a wonderful spot of calm in my day.

The last picture is so amazing. Such a pity you don't know the source.

Completely agree about the film, nothing feels better that when you finish developing film and a stunning image literally pops up infront of you, with digital it's well...yeah easier, like you said, but I think it loses a bit of the magic.
Nostalgia it is!!!

love your blog, and your dog×D

Way to be courageous with your photography! I think its same way for filming movies, I'm hoping to get into filming on film through classes soon, but the equipment and cost difference is crazy. But its good to keep trying new things, good luck with black and white!

@Rose, Pearl and Grace: No, I don't know how to work in a dark room. It's one of the things I'd love to learn. There's something more special about developing it yourself vs. going to a place to have other people do it.

when you try film you'll see that it's the lack of ability to see the picture instantly what actually matters and is exciting. there's no better feeling than finally seeing your pictures on a developed film. especially those which you had already forgotten you took : )

stunning. it's easy you to forget what you lose going to digital! instant gratification is nice, but these are lovely.

You are totally right. All of my best pictures are from film, not digital. I use digital mostly now for the convenience, but I miss using film in my Cannon and need to return to it!

Because of this post I went off and bought a film camera. It's sad how hard it is to find one in the big electronic shops. They're all digital now. I hope I can take pictures as good as these!

Beautiful photographs! You have inspired me to get out my old Canon and start shooting with some film....I forget what it's like to wait patiently (or in my case impatiently) to see what you've come up with....aaaah the joy!
Great blog!

Brillig, as always! In his youth, my Father was a keen photographer and had a lovely, really old film camera. BUT, he gave it away. Now I have no way to catch moments in the same dated way.

Oh well. I'm sure digital will be dated one day.

I absolutely agree - that last photo is captivating. For some reason it brings to mind Anne of Green Gables. Lovely.

I love film. I agree there is something about the light you just can't replicate with digital. I like the slightly more subtle tones and the grain you get with film too.

I'm doing a film project over at A Roll a Week, please have come visit if you can. I'd love to hear what you think.
