Her underwater graces

Everything looks so graceful underwater, so peaceful. I'd love to try an underwater photo shoot sometime, but I'm not sure how I'd execute it. Forgive me for sounding amateur, but what type of equipment is needed for an underwater shoot?

P.S. The winner of the Flavanilla Jewelry giveaway is Ko of Toast and Nutella. Congrats girl! Please email me your postal address so that we can ship out your necklace!

i'm not entirely sure, but i know you need an underwater housing for your camera, and special waterproof flashes - most of the time they seem to look like a macro light set-up on brackets at either side of the camera.
i just got a little olympus waterproof point and shoot - am waiting for warm weather to use it.

I have done a bit of this before, while scuba diving. As Mel states, underwater housing is a good start!

My point and shoot pentax is waterproof and I've had a lot of fun with it while snorkeling and playing in the ocean and pools. But I'm not sure about the fancier cameras. Such a cool photo though!

I know this is a silly comment in the face of lots of technical photography comments... but I've always had really really great results using an underwater disposable camera!!!!!! Obviously it's big surprise what you get in the end!!!!!!!
But my sister has a waterproof digital and that's a great investment.
:P

Yeah, even disposable underwater cameras work fine, if you've got good ambient lighting (ie, sun!). The thing is that in water, details and things don't really come out the same way, and stellar equipment is not really needed.

One other method is to take pictures in a tank, or aquarium-like thing. I'm pretty sure the picture you posted was taken in that manner, if you look at the glare and reflections. That's probably the easiest way to do it, though you'd have to find such a water tank.

In any case, that is a very lovely picture.

Rent an underwater housing for your camera. You can shoot available light with low light, so don't rent the flash for the housing.

Or get a disposable and play around.

It's loads of fun! I just shot a catalogue where one whole day was under water.

I'm not really any help on the advice front. But I'd love to see what you come up with. The only time I've ever taken photos underwater was with a disposable waterproof camera. I'm actually wondering now where I stashed those photos...

You really should do an underwater shoot. I have no idea what equipment you'd need, but I know that with that eye of yours, you'd capture some lovely shots.
