Look Alikes

Thursday, February 4, 2010
Today, while browsing through pretty pictures, I stumbled upon this:
Hands

Which closely resembles this:
Hands

The idea for the photo was entirely my own. And yet, someone who lives thousands of miles away had the same idea.

Is anything original anymore or is everything we do influenced by what we see?

Sooooo interesting. There are probably a 1000 more people out there with pictures of sand in hands or even feet in water. I'm not sure it's something you could ever prove that someone copied...but your photo is unique because of the composition, the lighting, the materials. I have the same concern when writing about organizing or decorating. Really, it's all been said before in 1000s of books, it's just finding a new way to present it. A new way to teach it. Of putting your own twist on it. That's what makes it uniquely yours.

The internet-era, before this, you probably never know about your twin-photo. xoxo

Yes, all our best ideas seem to have their doppelgangers out there ...

it is hard to see sometimes when you think your original idea isnt so original anymore.
but i think it can still mean the same thing for you. the moment. the light on the glitter. and i think its amazingingly beautiful all the same! i really love the light in your photo.

@Mary: Yes, you make a good point. It would be a whole lot easier to try to be original if it wasn't for the Internet!

But, being creative is where we show our originality, every day! :)

Just think of it as: most people you meet, won't know that 3 other people in the country had the same idea as you. They'll think it was just you.

Also, it's sort of a sign that we're all connected.

hmm good question. It quite hard to be truly original ever b/c ever person is a combination of ideas and inspirations derived from the life they have lead. What makes it special is the take they twist into an idea and the joy of their soul they pour into their work.

In my opinion, everything we do is influenced by our environment. Our identities are formed by an internalization of social constructions presented to us through institutions such as the media, the family, the church, etc depending on how we grew up or where, etc. Even though I do believe that there can be original work, original thoughts and people, I also believe that what we all call "self" is simply a creation.

<3 Great topic!

Amy / Handmade Evolution on February 4, 2010 6:46 PM said...

i think what this internet age teaches us is that we have to hold things in open hands - just like your photos. b/c truly we are all influenced by each other and sometimes it's so tough to know how/why or if we all came up with any given idea on our own. having said that it's good to give credit to others when it's due and to be creative and innovate...

It's interesting how many people in the world can be thinking the same thing.

Both of these photos are great.

A teacher of mine told me a lot of people get the same ideas. Only a few really do it. So I'm both of them have the same picture idea and made it come true.

i honestly believe that nothing is original anymore. it comes down to how you make it as your own.. i guess?

I love this post because you bring up a good point! I feel that all the time when I take photos - and personally, I think it's a beautiful connection and yours is unique and original despite the resemblance to the other, you know? love

It's a tricky one isn't it? A comedian on the radio said the only way he could copyright a joke was to write it down, date it and send it recorded delivery to himself but never to open it. Long winded but effective apparently!

At least you managed to create your picture first!
I can't count the times when I found something on the Internet that was more or less what I planned to create...
How frustrating!

I know one more!
By the young photographer Marianna Fiero

It's in her snow series, well actually there are two.

Including this one:

Let me know what you think...

You make a good point, I sometimes wonder about it myself. I think as long as you came up with the idea all by yourself it is original, even if it has been done before, you will always do it a bit different.

Sidney on February 5, 2010 2:56 AM said...

there are loads and loads of pictures out there like these two especially on we heart it. you have to find inspiration from somewhere it's how you make it your own. i'm sure this happens to many people especially in photography where pictures end up looking similar. but no two pictures will ever turn out the same anyway.

I just deleted my original comment as it sounded ok in my head but on reading it back it sounded a little harsh that came more from the fact I'm having a bad day rather than what I was trying to say! :P But I don't think that anything is truly original, something somewhere always has an influence even if it comes subconciously, from all the things we see and hear over time. I also think that there must be a staggering amount of coinsidences that must take place in such a vast world!

Anonymopluts said...

A subtle way of saying "this person stole my idea!"? Because, albeit there is a similarity there, yours is hardly the first picture with glitter and hands we've ever seen.

And there are many images resembling the rest of the pictures in that particular series.

nyrid on February 5, 2010 6:39 PM said...

Anonymopluts, I doubt she's saying it was a stolen idea. I think you're assuming WAY too much.

I think both are lovely interpretations of a similar idea.

Ania on February 6, 2010 1:29 PM said...

either way, isn't this just so cool and mindblowing? that you someone miles away dreams up an idea same as you, or is wondering about the same thing...

Melissa on February 6, 2010 3:24 PM said...

how cool! isnt that amazing? that we see things, get inspired, and we find out one day we shared that inspiration with someone else? cool how still very different though!

After working in the retail industry for 8 years, I know that everyone copies everyone else. So Bravo to anyone trying to make something on their own. Even if it does already exist!

ke_ke827 on February 7, 2010 7:27 PM said...

I dont think you can ever truely know. Both are beautiful pictures. Maybe that photo wasn't a copy cat and someone had the same inspiration as you. You can never say. Least nobody used your photo as their own because that can happen with the internet, which is another downfall. Being able to showcase your work on the internet always poses risk. What out ways the risk though having people be "copy cats" so to speak or displaying your beautiful work. I paint so I think about this when displaying my work on the internet.

everything is a copy of copy of a copy.

nothing can be new in the world because every drawing/photograph/idea has to come from somewhere.. it has to have been put in the mind by something.

i quite like this thought though. the world is a copy of the world, execpt through different eyes maybe.

such a good point/question!
yes, i do think we all are very influenced by others, especially in the 'blogging world'. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, in my opinion.

(Love yours more, definitely)

x.

Danielle (Loodle) on February 15, 2010 9:36 AM said...

That's my photo! Let me assure you, I never saw your picture before. But now that I have, I can definitely see the similarities. I prefer yours over mine, but sorry if I ever made your work feel unoriginal. I've had the same situtation happen! It was especially suspicious when the copycat was one of the first people to favorite the picture and posted their picture a week later, haha. But everyone wants to claim pictures or ideas as their own, you know? We should really be quite flattered that someone was inspired by us or by the things we are inspired by.

The Drifter and the Gypsy on February 16, 2010 1:23 PM said...

@Danielle: Yes, I agree. Both pictures are lovely-don't worry, I wasn't accusing you of anything! I love how people can have the same idea, but they are executed slightly differently. That's what makes it so interesting.
